We stand by Black Lives Matter and Trans people

23 June 2020

by The Chair Team

We unequivocally support the protests against the injustices inflicted on the Black community since time immemorial, happening around the world right now. We also fully support the rights of trans people to live as the gender they have always known themselves to be, and exist and thrive in spaces meant specifically for that gender.

If you celebrate the Glorious 25th May, or cheered for Cheery when she got to live her gender on her own terms, then so do you.

“The phrase 'Someone ought to do something' was not, by itself, a helpful one. People who used it never added the rider 'and that someone is me'.”
Hogfather

In this case, that someone is us. We commit to:

  • Lifting up and amplifying the voices of existing Black and minority ethnic community members.
  • Making the Convention as welcoming, open and supportive as possible to Black and minority ethnic people.
  • Attracting more Discworld fans of colour to enrich our community.
  • Open, receptive, honest and respectful dialogue about Discworld and the writings of Terry Pratchett and the way these works have dealt with race, gender and other issues, and how they evolved over time.
  • Supporting our trans and non-binary members to feel safe, loved and supported in Convention spaces.
  • Learning, understanding, and acting on what we’ve learned to improve our support and increase the accessibility of our events and spaces for people who experience discrimination and prejudice - however and wherever that manifests in our community.

As our Chair, Taz, likes to say - and as has always and ever will be true, Always Be Excellent to Each Other.

Yours,

The Convention Committee
